Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay Technology This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in employing video review technology.

Replay systems will be launched at Wimbledon this year.

Athletes will gain the option to contest certain decisions from the official, mirroring the practice currently in place at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system will be operational on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development arrives only a year after the AELTC introduced ELC, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the official to re-examine specific decisions, such as:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there will be no limit on the number of challenges a competitor can request.

Case in Point

A recent incident took place in Indian Wells recently, where a top player initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a tough call for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and ruled the player was responsible for interference, awarding the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.

Further Updates

Another change at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where fans have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly 100 days to go until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
